Buff Up Your DNFs

If you’re opening right now, I can (almost) guarantee three things about you:

  1. You support my work (Thank you! Without people like you work would be so boring)

  2. You’re curious about your body (always a good thing)

  3. Your head isn’t sitting in an optimal position on your neck which might be contributing to... (see next list)

a. Headaches

b. Blurred vision

c. Upper trap tightness

d. Shoulder pain

e. Breathing issues

f. Tightness in your jaw

Giving you unwanted wrinkles (not based on any fact, pure clickbait to get you to pay attention to this epic information)

Focus on activating the deep neck flexors.

These nifty stabilizers live at the front of your neck, along the bones of the spine and they have the all-important job of gliding your cranial genius slightly back in space.

You see the neck is a complex structure that has a lot happening in it. Your breathing and feeding tubes pass through this zone, your neck has a lot of movement availability and inside the facet joints of the cervical spine are arteries that take blood up to the brain.

When we look at the mobility/stability continuum (Gray Cook) the cervical spine wants STABILITY. With the neck stable, the thoracic spine can pick up the movement slack and get your body moving as nature intended.

Lead me to the light:

1. Put your hand on the back of your head and glide your head back into it then keep it there. This strategy is useful to implement throughout the day, especially if you're at your desk.

2. Channel your inner nutter and move your head like a chicken (scientifically proven to make you feel good, I'm not joking). A great one to do before you start your workout/yoga practice, as it turns on not only the deep neck flexors but all the way down your front body too.

3. Nailed the above exercise? Add resistance! Wrap a stretchy band around the back of your head and move your chin forward and back against the resistance. This will get those weak muscles stronger fast and it'll become easier to hold your head in a good position :)

I can’t wait to share all the knowledge with you and hear how it helps your spine, breathing, and jaw through my book!
