Has the Hype Around Fascia Fizzled Out?
Is the topic of fascia worth all the time we've been spending on it?
Well, it does exist and it is AMAZING! And for those two reasons all the time that has been spent learning about it is NOT A WASTE! But, the truth is, it's NOT WHAT'S IN CHARGE.
For example, let's take the example of someone with scoliosis; With fascia as our focus we might spend time strengthening their convex curves, foam rolling their concave curves, and giving them the almighty task of holding a neutral spine 24/7!
All of the above strategies are GREAT and WORTH DOING, but they are only one piece of the puzzle, PROPRIOCEPTION! Without addressing the higher order systems, aka the VISUAL AND VESTIBULAR, you'll be FIRE FIGHTING WITH A WATER GUN. Why? Because of a nifty little hierarchy, known as the neural hierarchy.
This little pyramid is a representation of what the brain will prioritise.
As you can see, proprioception is under the mercy of the visual and vestibular systems. Particularly in the example of scoliosis, if the vestibular system isn't sure where the middle is, the proprioceptive system will pay the price.
The same rules apply if you're running, handstanding or weightlifting. We need to address all three systems and not just the proprioceptive system, which has been the norm in the movement world.
The next step is to be more aware of the visual and vestibular systems which is why my classes on AnatoMove have these drills women into the sequences. Ultimately they help the brain take in better information so the output can be far more empowering.
